Before Fame

He began practicing taekwondo at a young age. His breakthrough came as a teenager when he won gold at the 2010 Junior World Taekwondo Championships in Sharm el-Sheikh and became the only Arab athlete to win gold at that event. He captured both the World Junior Championship and the Asian Junior Championship in 2012. He studied at Al-Ahliyya Amman University while continuing to train at Jordan's national taekwondo center. His big rise to fame came after winning the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Trivia

He defeated Russian taekwondo fighter Alexey Denisenko in the 2016 Olympic final to secure his gold medal. He was awarded by the Jordan Olympic Committee 100,000 Jordanian Dinar in 2016 for his win.

His family has Palestinian origins from the town of Abu Ghosh near Jerusalem, though he was born and raised in Jordan.
