First Premier of Northern Nigeria who served from 1954 to 1966. His creation of the first indigenous federal government in Nigeria directly led to country's independence from Britain.
He studied Local Government Administration in England on a scholarship in 1948.
He helped modernize and unify Northern Nigeria but was assassinated on 15 January 1966 in a coup which toppled Nigeria's post-independence government.
He had three daughters.
He and Abdulsalami Abubakar were both Nigerian politicians.
