Rose to fame during her tenure as the First Lady of Nigeria as the wife of the 15th president of the nation Muhammadu Buhari. She assumed the office with her husband's electoral victory in 2015 after working as a beauty therapist and author.
She graduated with her B.A. in public administration from Ahmadu Bello University. She would later go on to gain her master's in international affairs and strategic studies from Nigerian Defence Academy before gaining her certificates in beauty therapy and cosmetology.
She had her debut book Essentials of Beauty Therapy: A Complete Guide for Beauty Specialists published in 2014. She founded the Future Assured initiative to protect vulnerable groups of Nigeria.
She shares five children with her husband.
Her husband took over for former president of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan upon his assumption of office in 2015.
