Before Fame

Following two years of service with the British Army, he attended Merton College, Oxford, and subsequently worked as an Oxford Times editor and a Westminster Press journalist.

His first three novels -- The Labyrinth Makers, The Alamut Ambush, and Colonel Butler's Wolf -- were adapted into an early 1980s British television miniseries titled Chessgame.

Born in Hertfordshire, England, he spent his early days as a student at The King's School in Canterbury.
