Before Fame
She began singing and performing music as a teenager. She relocated to Washington D.C. in 1981 to pursue her music career in the United States. She released her first album Aster Aweke in 1990 followed by her second album Kabu in 1991. She returned home to Ethiopia in 1997.

Her album Kabu peaked at #4 on Billboard's World Music chart in 1991. Her music was inspired by Tilahun Gessesse, Bizunesh Bekele, and Donna Summer.
Family Life
She was born in Gondar, Ethiopia and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Her family initially did not approve of her desire to have a career in music.
