He was born Kevin Kioko, but goes by his stage name Bahati. He grew up an orphan who lost his mother at the age of 7. He adopted two daughters named Purity and Rose and a son named Morgan by the age of 20.
He put his singing career on hold when he claimed his life was in danger by fellow gospel singer Willy Paul who he also claims stole his music.
