About

Portuguese explorer most known for being the first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa in 1488. His voyage took a route that charted through the open Atlantic ocean instead of staying close to the western coast of Africa. His journey would end up establishing important sea trade routes between Europe and Asia. 

Before Fame

He was a very experienced mariner before undertaking his famous journey. He is believed to have traded ivory along the coast of Guinea as early as 1478. 

Trivia

Upon returning to Europe, he was highly rewarded for his accomplishments. He was given a squire position in the court of King John II, and also served as superintendent of the royal warehouses from 1494-1497. 

Family Life

He came from a long line of explorers and mariners. One of his ancestors, Dinis Dias e Fernandes, discovered the Cape Verde islands in 1444.

He and Ferdinand Magellan were both Portuguese explorers who were first in their respective accomplishments.
