His family was residing in Bronxville, New York, when he was born. He was raised in Briarcliff Manor. His first wife Pauline Baez was the sister of renowned folk singer Joan Baez. In 1968, he remarried to Helen Marden. He had two sons and a daughter. His son became a bassist.
