She was born to a violinist father and pianist mother and debuted at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium when she was seven; she studied at the Juilliard School.
She taught at multiple universities in the United States, including Rice University and the University of Michigan.
She married her first husband in 1951 and had five children with him.
Like Yehudi Menuhin, she also studied with Louis Persinger.
