World Golf Hall of Fame member who won 40 PGA Tour events, including the 1955 Masters Tournament and the U.S. Open in 1949 and 1956.
He was a licensed dentist and gave up the practice to play golf.
With his 6'2" height and dashing good looks, he was given a couple of parts on the big screen, appearing in the 1950 film Follow the Sun and the 1960 film The Bellboy.
His father, also a dentist, taught him how to play golf, beginning at age seven.
His career PGA Tour win total was equaled by Walter Hagen.
