Folk and indie singer and songwriter known for his songwriting, for his songs "After Hours," "Lose This Number," "Northsiders," "Atheist," "Strawberry Lemonade," "Sitting Up With a Sick Friend," and "Rubberneckers." and for his albums Beginners, Quitters, and Paradise Pop. 10. He is also known for his musical and personal relationship with actress and musician Maya Hawke. 

Before fame

He was initially interested in writing fiction. He began playing guitar when he was around 12 years old, which marked the start of his transition into songwriting. He performed as part of the band The Driftwood Singers early in his career before shifting fully into solo work. He released early independent projects, including The Hell with It in 2013 and Yeah Okay, I Know in 2014. His career took a major step forward when he signed with ANTI-Records in 2019, which led to the announcement and release of the breakout album Beginners in 2020. 

Trivia

He has openly discussed living with pure obsessive-compulsive disorder (also known as Pure OCD) and has referenced mental health themes in his songwriting. He offered free guitar lessons via Zoom in 2020 as part of charitable and community support efforts. His 2024 album Paradise Pop. 10 featured guest vocals from Maya Hawke. 

Family life

He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up in Los Angeles, California. He married Maya Hawke on Valentine's Day 2026 in New York City.
