Labour Party politician who represented England's Forest of Dean constituency in Parliament from 1997 to 2005. During the early 1990s, she worked as a consultant for the Oxfordshire County Council.
She studied geography at St. Hugh's College, Oxford and went on to obtain postgraduate degrees in education and special education from the University of Bath and Bristol Polytechnic, respectively.
During her time in the educational sector, she fought on behalf of special needs children.
She and her husband, Richard, married in 1975 and became parents to two daughters.
She was elected to Parliament during the first term of Prime Minister Tony Blair.
