African-American poet and publisher whose works include "The Ballad of Birmingham" and "Booker T. and W.E.B." He is also known for "A Poet is Not a Jukebox" and "The Profile on the Pillow."
He studied library science at the University of Michigan and went on to found a publishing company called Broadside Press.
He was named Poet Laureate of Detroit in 1981.
He was married three times: to Ruby Hudson, Mildred Pinckney, and finally, Vivian Spencer.
He was influenced by the work of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes.
