After performing in numerous stage productions at London's Old Vic theatre, he began his television career as the presenter of a children's program called Play School.
Tragically, he suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism in his early fifties.
His marriage to fellow entertainer Phyllida Law resulted in two actress daughters: Emma and Sophie.
His younger daughter, Sophie Thompson, appeared in the popular 1994 film Four Weddings and a Funeral, as well as in the 1996 Gwyneth Paltrow film, Emma.
