Democratic Party politician who held office as Governor of Indiana from 1989 to 1997. From 1999 to 2011, he represented his home state in the United States Senate.
After graduating from Indiana University with a business degree, he earned his law degree from the University of Virginia.
During his time as Governor of Indiana, he managed, without raising state taxes for a full eight years, to create a budget surplus in his state.
His marriage to fellow attorney Susan Bayh produced two children.
He and Dan Coats both served as United States Senators from Indiana.
