As a child, he watched game shows and dreamed of being in one. He graduated from Moose Jaw High School, where he also played tennis.
Trivia
He was an outfielder in the baseball minor leagues. He then moved to Major League Baseball, competing in the Western Major Baseball League. In the 1960s, he began a television career and worked at CFCF-TV in Montreal and CFTO-TV in Toronto. In 2004, he was nominated for the Ford C. Frick Award.

His daughter Carrie Olver worked on shopping channels and The Weather Network. His other children are named Alison and Emily.
