Storyteller, playwright, and political activist who traveled throughout and beyond Africa as a performance artist. She toured an original theatrical piece called Have you seen Zandile? throughout the United States and Europe.
Early in her adulthood, she worked as a domestic servant and a magazine writer.
Her stories, performed in numerous languages, mixed folklore and dance with current affairs.
Born in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, she credited her mother and grandmother with inspiring her to tell stories.
She and Desmond Bagley are among South Africa's best-known literary figures.
