British stage and screen actor who appeared in Broadway productions of My Fat Friend, My Fair Lady, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. He earned two Tony Awards in the category of Best Actor in a Musical.
Prior to becoming an actor, he worked as a secretary and a farmer. He made his stage debut at the famous Old Vic theatre in 1946.
He appeared in such films as Hawaii and A Night to Remember.
He was the Oxfordshire-born son of a butcher. He studied at both Oxford University and London's Central School of Speech and Drama.
He performed with Ian Richardson in the 1976 Broadway revival of My Fair Lady.
