Brazilian politician who served as Governor of São Paulo from 2001 to 2006 and was re-elected in 2011.
He attended the Universidade de Taubaté and became an anesthesiologist, but entered politics while he was in medical school, serving as a city council member and later the mayor of Pindamonhangaba.
He ran for President of Brazil in 2006 and came in second with 41% of the votes.
He married Maria Lúcia Ribeiro Alckmin and had three children.
He attended the 2011 World Economic Forum, which Mexican president Felipe Calderon also attended.
