Before Fame
He showed an interest in fashion, art, and self-expression from a young age. He began sewing dresses and stage outfits as a teenager. He then worked in fashion retail and design. His professional breakthrough came in 1987 when he and his longtime partner and manager Dieter Schroth opened a boutique called Jeans Garden. He officially launched the POMPÖÖS brand in 1990. Trivia
He won a Golden City Gate Award in 2016 for the film Haute Cuisine Ladies Lunch. He designed a special Bible slipcase for the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation in 2017 in a collaboration with the German Bible Society. He designed a stained-glass church window for a Protestant church in Rümmingen, Germany in 2022.

He was born in Maulbronn, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and grew up in a working-class family. He has a younger brother. He was in a long-term relationship with Dieter Schroth who also served as his manager and business partner for decades, and they married in 2015.
