He was educated at Kamrup Academy School, Guwahati, and Cotton College for his undergraduate education. He also has a law degree and was a practicing attorney before starting his political career in 2001.

He is from India. He grew up with six siblings. His wife is named Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, and they have a son, Nandil, and a daughter, Sukanya.
