Sailing pioneer most famous as the founder of the catamaran company Hobie Cat. He is credited with creating the process through which foam and fiberglass surfboards are created.
He grew up in Ontario, California and began crafting surf boards out of balsa in the early 50's.
He was also a competitive surfer who made the Guinness Book of World Records by surfing the wake of a motorboat for twenty-six miles.
He had three children.
His company was the inspiration for the name of Jeremy Jackson's character, Hobie Buchannon, on the hit TV series Baywatch.
