An American writer and children's book author, she is best known for her novel The Fledgling, which won the prestigious Newbery Medal.
She studied astronomy at both Wellesley College and the University of Michigan.
Many of her novels are set in Concord, Massachusetts.
With her husband, Bill Langton, she had three sons.
She and Cynthia Rylant were both awarded the Newbery Medal.
