Notable as both a Jesuit priest and, following his exit from religious life, a writer, editor and publisher, Aguirre also served as the Spanish Ministry of Culture's Director General of Music.
After earning a philosophy degree from the Comillas Pontifical University, he studied theology in Munich, Germany, and subsequently entered the priesthood.
His published works include Sermones en Espana, Las Horas Situadas, and Altas Opportunidades.
His marriage to aristocrat Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart (the eighteenth Duchess of Alba) began in 1978.
By marriage, Aguirre became a member of Spanish nobility. Beatified saint and fellow Spanish religious figure Rafael Baron was also related (by blood) to Spanish dukes and duchesses.
