Earned his first major coaching gig with the NCAA's Dayton Flyers in 1989. He won an NCAA title as an assistant coach under Rick Pitino at Kentucky in 1996. In the NBA, he coached the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers.
He played multiple varsity sports in both high school and college.
He is the son-in-law of legendary NBA coach Jack Ramsay.
He has three children with his wife Ann Cleavinger.
He coached star guard/forward Paul Pierce during his time in Boston.
