Longtime double bassist for John Coltrane from 1961 to 1967 who appeared on the album A Love Supreme.
He joined Coltrane's quartet in 1962.
He worked with Ornette Coleman for many years, recording with him on Ornette on Tenor and Art of the Improvisers.
He raised three children, all of whom have gone on to be artists.
