IndyCar and CART racer who won one race in each series. He received the Scott Brayton Trophy in 1997.
He became the youngest IMSA Champion in racing history in 1982.
His career was briefly put on hiatus when he was incarcerated for involvement in drug trafficking.
His father, John Paul Sr was also a racer, and the two men won the 1982 12 Hours of Sebring together.
He finished second at the 1984 24 Hours of Le Mans, while racing with partner Jean Rondeau.
