Remembered for his starring roles in 1980s and '90s Broadway productions of The Phantom of the Opera, Pacific Overtures, and The King and I, Gray is also notable for his television appearances on Guiding Light, The Equalizer, and Miami Vice.
Before beginning his career as a musical theater actor, he studied at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
He taught theatre at both Rollins College and the University of Hartford.
With his wife, fellow Broadway performer Dodie Pettit, he recorded albums titled Voices of Broadway and Songs from the Journey.
Just a few years before his sudden death of a heart attack, he played the villainous Scar in the Julie Taymor-directed national touring production of The Lion King.
