She was born in Hanoi, Vietnam. She married Minh Di and had two children with him. She later married Mai Ba Trac; they had one daughter together. In 1975, she married a third time to journalist Nguyen Hoang Doan.
A devout Catholic, she was honored to personally meet Pope John Paul II, in a ceremony honoring Vietnamese martyrs for Catholicism.
