Californian artist who is the only artist known to study under the French Impressionist Camille Pissarro.
She went to the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design in New York.
She turned to religion and teaching after retiring from painting in 1905.
She grew up with her family in Pitcairn, New York.
Fellow artist Mary Cassatt introduced her to Camille Pissaro, and she ended up working with him.
