Before Fame
He studied at Mahatma Gandhi College and University College, Thiruvananthapuram. He then completed an M.A. in Hindi at Banaras Hindu University. He worked as a college lecturer in Hindi at S. T. Hindu College and Scott Christian College in the late 1950s and early 1960s before he began pursuing an acting career. He made his screen debut in Ninamaninja Kalpadukal in 1963 quickly followed by Moodupadam. His first major role was in the classic film Chemmeen in 1965.
Trivia
He was the very first recipient of the Filmfare Award for Best Actor - Malayalam due to his work in Swayamvaram in 1972. He received the J. C. Daniel Award in 2004 for lifetime contribution from the Government of Kerala. He received the Padma Shri award in 2013 from the Government of India.
Family Life
He was born and raised in Gowreesapattom, present day Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. His parents were R. Parameswaran Pillai and Thankamma Pillai. He has one daughter, Dr. Uma J. Nair.
Associated With
He appeared alongside Amitabh Bachchan in the film Saat Hindustani in 1969. He acted alongside Rajinikanth in Dharma Durai in 1991.
