About
British-born granddaughter of Queen Victoria who became the last queen of Romania as the wife of King Ferdinand I. During World War I, she worked as a nurse and became a national icon. She was called "Mother of the Wounded" and "The Soldier Queen."

She was baptised in the private chapel of Windsor Castle.
Trivia
She published many books and short stories. Her first book, 1912's The Lily of Life, was a fairy tale. She wrote an autobiography, The Story of My Life, which was published in three volumes in 1934-1935.
Family life
She and her husband had six children; King Carol II, Queen Elisabeth of Greece, Queen Maria of Yugoslavia, Prince Nicholas, and Princess Ileana. Her son, Prince Mircea, died at age three.
Associated with
She visited the United States in 1926 and toured several cities. At an official White House dinner she met President Calvin Coolidge and his wife Grace Coolidge.
