Leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy who took office as Prime Minister of the Netherlands in 2010. His prior political appointments include State Secretary for Education, Culture and Science and State Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment.
After training as a pianist, he earned a master's degree in history from Leiden University and chaired the youth division of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy.
While serving as Prime Minister, he continued to teach part-time at The Hague's Johan de Witt College.
He was born to Izaak Rutte and Hermina Dilling in The Hague, Netherlands.
He took office as Prime Minister during the rule of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
