British illustrator who became known for her botanical illustration works. Her drawings were used by scientists in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and she was the first artist to depict New Zealand's flora in depth and the first official artist of the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Before fame
Her family member was the director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, and they encouraged her to pursue a career in illustration. She became the official illustrator for the Curtis Botanical Magazine in 1878 after the publication ended ties with its previous illustrator, Walter Hood Fitch.
Trivia
Her works appeared in the Curtis Botanical Magazine for more than forty years. She was the second woman to become an associate of the Linnaean Society.
Family life
She was born in Bombay, India, but moved with her family to England as a young child.
Associated with
Joseph Dalton Hooker was her second cousin and a botanist with whom she collaborated.
