Before Fame
She worked a variety of jobs in high school while attending Blair High School before attending Dana College. She worked as a newspaper reporter and at a local record-store during and right after college. She launched her first business Hello Holiday before founding the nonprofit Safe Space Nebraska. She ran for Nebraska's 8th District Senate seat and won decisively in November 2018 and became the first openly LGBTQ person elected in the state's legislature. She was reelected in 2022. She changed her party registration from Democratic to Independent in 2023.

She became a hot air balloon crew member when she was 22 years old. She did floral-design work and helped brides with bouquets and event décor during college and her early career. She originally declared no religion publicly and identifies as an atheist.
