Top 12 finalist on the 14th season of American Idol who previously competed on the X Factor and America's Got Talent. He has won multiple local contests, including Ole Miss Idol, and released a debut EP called Music Therapy in 2011.
Before he was even 10 years old, he would make up humorous original songs to make his family laugh. He received a beginner's first guitar when he was 7, and after begging his parents, received an actual guitar when he was 9. He later learned to play the drums, piano and violin.
He first auditioned for American Idol in 2010 when he was 16 years old. The producers told him he had plenty of time to grow and had the potential to be amazing. He took the words to heart.
He was born the youngest of three to parents Mason and Linda Smith in Hattiesburg, MS. His mother worked as a show choir director. He and his siblings were all valedictorians at Lumberton High School in different years.
He beat out fellow American Idol competitor, of a different year, Skylar Laine in the 2011 Purvis Show Choir Invitational.
