Affiliated at various points in his career with the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Social Democratic Party, and the Czech Party of Civic Rights, this politician took office in 2013 as the third President of the Czech Republic. Previously, he had served as his country's Prime Minister.
He graduated from Prague's University of Economics in 1969.
From 1996 until 1998, he served as the Speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies.
His marriage to Blanka Zemanova resulted in a son named David and ended in divorce in the late 1970s. He and his second wife, Ivana Bednarcikova, welcomed a daughter named Katerina in 1994.
He and Vaclav Klaus were both prime ministers-turned-presidents of the Czech Republic.
