Before Fame
He began his career in entertainment as a dancer and would later move on to Broadway shows and radio shows where he performed comedy.
Trivia
Some of his film roles include a part in the 1936 picture Go West Young Man as well as a voice role as Br'er Bear in Disney's Song of the South.
Family Life
He was married to Edna Stewart from 1941 until he departed in 2000. He left behind three children.

With the help of his wife, he opened the Ebony Showcase Theatre where black performers such as John Amos got to showcase their talent.
