Best known as the one-time daughter-in-law of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, this United Kingdom socialite became an American citizen in the early 1970s and, shortly thereafter, a Democratic activist and United States diplomat.
She grew up in the countryside of Dorset, England, and later studied in Germany and France.
Well-known for her high-profile love affairs, she was, at various points, involved with United States ambassador John Hay Whitney, American broadcaster W. Averell Harriman, and Italian businessman Gianni Agnelli, among many others.
Her seven-year marriage to Randolph Churchill resulted in her only child; in honor of his famous grandfather, she named her son Winston Churchill. Her second marriage was to Broadway and Hollywood producer Leland Hayward; her third husband, William Averell Harriman, was a Democratic politician and diplomat.
In the early 1990s, she was appointed by then- President Bill Clinton to the position of United States Ambassador to France.
