A Canadian historian and non-fiction author, he is known for works such as The Secret World of Og; The National Dream: The Great Railway; and 1967: The Last Good Year.
He worked in Klondike mining camps while studying at the University of British Columbia.
The Pierre Berton Award was established in his honor in 1994.
