Academy Award-nominated director of All the King's Men. His other directing and screenwriting credits include The Hustler, Body and Soul, and The Brave Bulls.
Before beginning his career as a director of Off-Broadway productions, he attended New York University.
During the late 1930s, he joined the American Communist Party.
He married Susan Siegel in 1936; they had two children together.
He worked with Paul Newman on the 1961 film The Hustler.
