American novelist who became a breakout star in 2012 with the release of his debut novel, the fantasy epic Throne of the Crescent Moon, which earned him a Locus Award. He is also an essayist for outlets like Salon, BuzzFeed and The New York Times.
He attended Henry Ford Community College, the University of Michigan, Brooklyn College and Rutgers University.
His poetry has been featured in anthologies like Big City Lit and Arab Detroit: From Margin to Mainstream.
He married oncology professor Hayley Thompson in 2007. He has a son and a daughter who are twins.
He and Elizabeth Bear are both recipients of the Locus Award for Best First Novel.
