He has authored an extensive list of acclaimed publications including The Heart Revolution: Releasing the Power to Live from the Inside Out and Paradox: The God Who Breaks the Rules. In 2008, he launched an annual event for spiritual leaders and attendees called the Heart Revolution Conference. He is also the co-founder of a nonprofit organization called Turning the Hearts Center which offers programs aimed at gang prevention as well as at providing educational and economic opportunities for youth and families.

He is a second-generation Mexican-American. He and his wife, Georgina, share six daughters together.
