American meditation teacher, author, and key advocate in bringing Buddhist mindfulness and metta practices to the West. She is the co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, MA. She has taught meditation around the world over the course of her career spanning several decades.
Before Fame
She endured a turbulent childhood as the result of her parents' divorce, her mother's passing, and her subsequent time spent in foster care. She discovered Buddhism in college while studying Asian philosophy at State University of New York at Buffalo. This later inspired her to travel to India, where she studied meditation.
Trivia
Her first book, Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness, was published in 1995. She hosts the Metta Hour Podcast and has written numerous acclaimed works including Real Happiness, Faith, and Real Change.
