Famous for playing Pam Simpson on the early 1970s ABC series Room 222, she is also notable for her role as Louise Coleman in the 1973 film The Sting, as well as for her NAACP Image Award-nominated performance in the 1960s television series Mission: Impossible.
In her early twenties, she moved to Los Angeles and began taking acting classes and appearing in stage productions with the Performing Arts Society Los Angeles.
She founded a Los Angeles organization for inner-city kids called TechniVision.
Born Shirley Cummings, she was raised in New York City and Detroit, Michigan. Her marriage to screen actor Lee Weaver began in 1971 and produced a daughter named Leis La-Te.
She and Eve McVeagh both played recurring roles on Room 222.
