Theoretical physicist who designed nuclear weapons as part of Project Orion. He helped design the Super Oralloy Bomb, which at the time was the largest pure fission bomb ever.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and later earned his PhD in Theoretical Physics from Cornell University.
After Project Orion, he became a strong advocate for worldwide nuclear disarmament and worked for the Defense Atomic Support Agency.
He had a daughter named Kathy.
He and Tom Banks are both theoretical physicists who have taught at the University of Santa Cruz.
