Chinese-American translator and academic. He accepted a professorship in Chinese literature and sinology at Arizona State University in 1995 and later became director of ASU's Asian Languages and Literatures program.
He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University.
He began his teaching career at The Ohio State University.
The Chinese versions of his name are Huáng Zōngtài and Huang Tsung-t'ai.
He and author Pierre Ryckmans both held positions as professors of Chinese Studies.
