After nine years of teaching science in middle and elementary schools, she decided to pursue the career she really desired, and enrolled in pastry school. She went on to work in a bakery as she started the Vanilla and Bean blog.
She was raised in a family with a meat-heavy diet, but switched to vegetarianism later in life because of her concerns about the environmental effects of the meat industry.
She and her husband Rob were high school sweethearts.
