Before Fame

He learned to play the banjo in 1885 from a circus comedian. He later entertained people at a freight line he opened called The Macon Midway Mule and Mitchell Wagon Transportation Company.

He was the first star of the Grand Ole Opry in the 1920s.

He married Matilda Richardson in 1889 and together they raised six sons.
