He began his professional boxing career on July 30, 2016 in a boxing match against Julio Rodas.
During his amateur boxing career, he won seven national championships and a gold medal at the 2013 Junior Olympics.
He was born and raised with both of his parents in the Grand Prairie, Texas area. His father, Vergil Ortiz Sr, was a professional boxer.
He is a member of Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions team.
